Throneaeon -
In the Name of US Death Metal
(Haastattelija: Jussi Helenius)
I only have
your first demo called Carnage and it sounds VERY
MUCH like early Deicide. How are the releases after
that compared to the demo tape? What kind of bands
have you been compared to during the years?
Actually "Carnage" is the second demotape
containing 4 tracks that were originally planned to
end up on a split-cd recorded in the summer of 1996.
The first official demotape was recorded and released
in 1995, four years after the band was formed. But
to answer your question, we've been compared to bands
such as Deicide, Morbid Angel and Vader, but also
with acts like Entombed and Monstrosity.
What
was the most important thing why you decided to form
a (death metal) band in the first place? Do you or
other members have experience from previous bands
before Throneaeon? Or does any of you have (had) side
project bands?
For me the reasons to start playing death metal were
called Death, Carcass and Napalm Death. I was playing
in various bands before joining Throneaeon and in
the mid nineties I might have had a sideproject or
two, but nothing serious. Tony and Jens were both
in a band called Succumb in the early nineties and
Jens was also the guitar player of the local death
metal act Abhoth for several years. I think Roger
had a sideproject in the mid nineties too, however
none of us are currently in any other bands and our
main focus has always been on Throneaeon!
In Sweden there
are thousands of metal bands and many death metal
bands, so how do you think Throneaeon stands out from
that mass? Can you name a band which doesn't sound
like anything else? What do you think are the strong
and weak points of the Swedish death metal scene?
I must say that the fact that we were heading forward
as focused as ever and recording brutal death metal
in the mid nineties when "everybody" except
Vomitory and Deranged played evil or melodic Black
Metal must give us some sort of cred. Well, maybe
there were a few more bands such as Abhoth, Crown
of Thorns, Centinex, Inverted and Necrony, but I still
think that the distinct American sound of Throneaeon
was really unique those days. There weren't many death
metal bands around and especially not any Florida/US
sounding bands. A Swedish band that doesn't sound
like anything else must be Therion... Christoffer
has created a unique style throughout the years and
if there's anyone that sounds like Therion today they
are obviously only repeating what Therion's done already.
About the strong/weak points of the Swedish scene
then. I think one of our strongest points is that
we've always had a massive amount of musicians/songwriters.
There are a lot of bands out in the woods of Sweden
and we export all kinds of music overseas. You can
find "elite" musicians from Sweden within
almost any genre and that is the reason why Sweden
has such a good reputation when it comes to the music
industry. The weak points must be that you really
don't get much support being a band in Sweden, there
are not many clubs willing to support other music
then the usual disco crap and the government isn't
very helpful with funds and such stuff. This is probably
why Swedish musicians get so far with their music,
'cause they have to struggle a long and winding road
to be able to reach out with their music, this makes
you very aware of your goals and keeps you going even
through really rough times.
The
gig in WCH6.66 will be your first time in Finland,
what are your expectations towards it? What do you
think about the other bands on that festival? Have
you played abroad before and if yes, what kind of
experiences have you had from those gigs? Do you prefer
to play with death/black metal bands or is it ok to
have different bands playing on the same festival/concert?
I really don't have that much expectations, but I've
heard great stuff about organizers/clubs in Finland
so I hope we will have a blast at WCH 6.66
Hmm,
I gotta check the website first to see which bands
that are visiting WCH. I've actually never heard Immersed
In Blood, but I know about them and people say they
are good. (Well, you mentioned Inverted in the
previous question and actually IiB consists of three
ex-Inverted members :)) I don't know if I've heard
any of the other bands except for Mörk Gryning
and they aren't really my bag of music. They put on
a good stageshow but I'm not really listening to their
kind of metal. We completed a European tour last autum
together with Benediction. We went to countries like
Holland, Switzerland, Germany, France & Belgium
The one experience I have from that tour is that I
now know I'm going to end up as an alcoholic if we
start touring more frequently. All these free beers
everywhere, I just don't have the character to say
"No, thank you".
What do you consider
is the most remarkable milestone in Throneaeon's career
so far? What are the goals you're striving for and
what are you ready to do or even sacrifice to reach
them?
I really can't put the finger on any single event
that is the most remarkable milestone in our career.
I have to say that the story of Throneaeon is marked
by a series of events that pushes the band forth.
For me the most important moments are when we complete
some of our goals. Like when we recorded our first
cd-effort (the "With Sardonic Wrath" mini-cd)
in 1998 and Helgrind Productions released it. Also
our first full-length album "Neither of Gods"
which Hammerheart Records released was an important
milestone or when we completed our first European
tour, that was really cool. Our goals for the near
future is to record a new full-length album and get
out on the roads to tour Europe again. Long time goals
are to earn a living from our music, recording albums
and touring worldwide. As long as I enjoy myself being
in the band I guess I'm willing to sacrifice quite
a lot to reach these goals.
Is
there any concept or special topic that is dealt often
in the Throneaeon's songs? How do you consider the
importance of lyrics (message?) compared to music?
Is there a topic you had never written a song about
but would like to write, or on the other hand, any
topic you'd never write about?
I asked Tony about this one, since he's the one who
writes all the lyrics, and here's what he had to say...
Tony: -
Well, not too much
then
Continue this sentence the way you feel best: "If
I could decide
"
what pizza I should order now, I'd die a happy
man.
Last greetings etc.
etc. Thanks for your time!
Thanks for the support! I wanna see all of you Finnish
freaks going crazy in front of the stage at WCH 6.66,
Friday the 17th of May, when we hit the stage. And
bring some cash 'cause we're gonna bring massive amounts
of merchandise
