Funeris
Nocturnum - Koodi WCH6.66:n lukkoon
(haastattelija: Serpent)
Ave Torment! How
are nightly funerals going? What are the latest news
from the cemetary?
At the moment everything is going pretty well. We
have even had a few more gigs than usually, and we
intend to do them as many as possible. The new line-up
has affected our playing and spirit positively, and
everything is going damn fine.
As FN is a relatively
young band, could you tell the band's history here?
Nope, as everyone reading this interview also has
the possibility to read the 'biography'-section from
our webpages at http://funerisnocturnum.cjb.net. Laziness
is not a vice.
What about your
discography and current line-up?
This far we've released our debut album Pure Satanic
Blasphemy (2000), second album From the Aspect of
Darkly Illuminated (2001) and our demo Slay and Burn
as a mini-cd with some bonus cover songs, also on
2001. All releases have been on Woodcut Records. The
third album Code 666 - Religion Syndrome Deceased
will be released 2.8.2002, also by Woodcut.
The reason for the rather fast pace of the releases
is probably that previously we had so few gigs that
there really was nothing else to do than compose new
material. And I'm personally so impatient that everytime
we have had enough material for an album, it has been
necessary for me to get it recorded.
Our line-up hasn't changed for 2 years, except for
the drummer, whom we replaced with a better one a
few months ago.
As there are plenty
of people unaware of Funeris Nocturnum's musical style,
how would you describe it with a few words?
Hmm, how should I start..few words
The first
album is fast and raw, though melodic, in the vein
of Dark Funeral, Marduk and Emperor.
The second album goes along the same lines, but it
is more thought over and progressive, and with some
thrash/death -influences.
The upcoming album is something else, then. It will
be quite a varied album, with lot's of influences
from different kinds of musical styles, and not only
of different genres of metal. It's kind of a hard
to explain. Musically, it's a quite of a mess of different
styles, but in the end it's probably easier to get
into, compositionally and considering the
arrangements. And it's an abomination to old-school
metal -people. Well, you'll hear. Now, as we have
composed new material with the new guy on drums, it
has been more straightforward, and possibly most brutal
Funeris Nocturnum for a long time. We've into that
again, and will leave all sorts techno and sentimentalisms
and that kind of crap to those who know them better.
On the lyrical side, FN is about anti-christianity,
and denying the standards of the "normal"
man set by the society.
You have got
quite much attention - both negative and positive
- in the Finnish metal scene and your pace with releases
has been quite fast. Do you think there's a connection
between these two factors or are they just purely
coincidental? Has Woodcut helped you to make a name
for the band or is it because your gigs and so forth?
Yeah, we've received negative response as well as
positive. We have recorded in a quick pace, and the
reason for that was already in a response to an earlier
question, and I don't think that it has anything to
do with feedback we've got. If somebody is pissed
off due to the fact that we do an album a year, then
so what? I'm not very interested in feedback anyway.
All kinds of crap has been floating around about us,
but we know what we are doing, and what other people
say won't affect or interest us. Of course positive
feedback is always pleasant, but being satisfied with
my own doings feels better.
Of course having a record-company behind us has helped
"making a name", but the fact remains, that
making one's music known is an issue of the band itself.
We haven't been making supershitty music at any point,
so I don't wonder if somebody hears, and even likes
our music. And that's probably the case, as we haven't
had that much advertising, not in magazines or anywhere
else. So this music speaks for itself.
